The Catalog and Navigation in Data Visualization and Analytics

This blog post will show how the “Catalog” and navigation work in Data Visualization (DV) and Analytics.

We will do this using OAS (Oracle Analytics Server) Data Visualization, specifically how it is used with Alma in the framework of Alma Analytics.

The Data Visualization and Analytics are tightly integrated and include the same “Catalog”.

The “Catalog” of Data Visualization and the “Catalog” of Analytics contain both Data Visualization projects as well as Analytics reports (Analyses).

Each entity, the Project and the Analysis, appears with a corresponding icon.

  • If from within Data Visualization a user clicks an Analytics report then it will open in Analytics (even though the user started in Data Visualization).
  • If from within Analytics a user clicks a Data Visualization project then it will open in Data Visualization (even though the user started in Analytics).

This is similar, in a way, to Windows Explorer, whereby a user sees files of various applications together.  If a Word file is clicked it will open in Word, and if an Excel file is clicked it will open in Excel.

Accessing Analytics Analyses from within Data Visualization

From with Data Visualization we will access the navigator:

and then we will access the “Catalog”

The catalog of Data Visualization contains both Data Visualization projects as well as Analytics analyses.  Below we see for example:

  • “Line graph P and E expenditures with forecast” is a Data Visualization project
  • “Transaction Expenditure Report for last 3 months” is an Analytics Analysis (report)

Now from within Data Visualization we will open the Analytics analysis:

The report opens in Analytics:

And if we open the Data Visualization project from with Analytics:

We see that it opens in data Visualization even though we started in Analytics:
